TM002 is built upon a 6x6 grid, each regular letter has 6 variants. It uses Opentype stylistic alternatives to cycle through them in order.
Although the non-distorted glyphs are all the same width, some of the alternatives are wider. However, the left and right side-bearings remain the same. Meaning TM002 is a monospaced font, but not really.
The initial inspiration for the typeface was taken from 80s computer terminals and the bitmap fonts they used. The idea is to imply the same visual interest given to these typefaces by the imperfections they gained by being displayed on CRT monitors.
